International surveys have shown that employee burnout is becoming a major issue worldwide, especially in the IT and ITeS sectors. Burnout, which stems from negative stress caused mainly by longer working hours and almost impossible-to-attain targets, takes a toll on employees' health and productivity. By taking positive measures to mitigate the `employee burnout syndrome', organizations can significantly benefit as committed employees are at the core of better financial performance of a company.

The changing job scenario in the globalized world has given rise to a new phenomenon called `the employee burnout syndrome'. Information Technology (IT) and Information Technology Enabled Services (ITES) Sectors are the most affected and employee burnout ranks second after attrition in the list of organizational woes. These sectors thrive on constant change and the software industry professionals are constantly under pressure to upgrade their skills and put in more hours of work while overstretching their limits of physical and mental endurance. The employees feel pressurized to give consistent excellent performance to get benefited by the corresponding internal incentive schemes, thereby further pushing up the stress levels. With competition breathing down their necks, working on a 12-hour shift to meet the almost impossible-to-attain targets in a given period of time results in the biological clock going for a toss. Break times are not conducive to socializing and also employees get less time to spend with their families throwing the work-life balance out of gear.
